The Five Faces Panel portrays figures that participated in the creation story of people who lived in and around what is now called Davis Canyon in southern Utah. They represent Spider Woman’s great grand daughters: Red Woman, Blue Woman, Yellow Woman, White Woman and Sun Youth. I was deeply touch by the drawings I saw there, which served the people of their time and remain for the ages. Through Carol Patterson’s research and writing (On the Trail of Spider Woman: Petroglyphs, Pictographs, and Myths of Southwest) and the journey into the canyon to visit the site, I feel traces of those ancient ones and their place in the universe. Their experience becomes part of me, which I pass on to you, and so it goes in the on-going search for personal/universal meaning and connection.
